Archived News (Jan. 2010- Nov 16, 2009):

CURRENT NEWS AND INFORMATION - 2009/2010

UPDATE: 01-13-2010
JUNIOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Still catching up, and in an attempt to make this endeavor faster and easier (and therefor more timely...) this section of the news on TRF will from this point forth be moved to a blog. The photos look GREAT against the cobalt blue of the site, but doing them on a website has become very inefficient.

Soooooooo, here is the link to the launch of the 'Ice and Times of Short Track Speedskating' blog. (TODAY'S ENTRY: US National Junior Championships-and I'm almost caught up!)

Ice and Times of Short Track Speedskating

I'll leave the main tab taking you to the website for a bit, as that update was just done yesterday, but eventually the main tab will be changed to just take you directly to the blog

UPDATE: 01-12-2010
AMERICAN CUP 2

Yes, in my (seemingly) never ending quest to catch up, here are some interesting tidbits and some photos
from American Cup 2, courtesy of Annette Gudmundsen Pumphrey and Teri Willingham
This will probably be the last photos posted on this page, as I'm sure you noticed, with
so many photos, this page probably took F-O-R-E-V-E-R to load.

Also, be sure to check out the new section on the main menu bar 'National Team Info' for T shirts you can buy
from the skaters, (hey, gotta represent at those Olympic parties you are no doubt planning on attending!)
links to their websites, facebook fan pages, twitters pages etc etc

...and YIKES! If I've got some links that go to the wrong website, please let me know so I can correct it.
(already found one-AAO's photo going to Jordan Malone's site...No Bueno!)
Contact: michelle@therockerfund.org to let me know where I had my head up my backside...

RANDOM THIS AND THAT INFORMATION....

SIMON CHO AND JULIAN WOOD

Talk about a blast from the past…and awwwwww, aren’t they just SO Cute!

In my quest to find some info on Simon Cho, Olympic Team member, I came across this ‘vintage’ (LOL)
photo of him and recent Junior World Team member Julian Wood. Julian will be our Skater of the Month for April.

Sun photo by Kim Hairston / February 17, 2005

Short-track speed skater Simon Cho (left) races Julian Wood, 14, during a training session in Wheaton. Cho says of his racing style: "I just skate as fast as I can and try to lose guys."

Chicago Tribune

This photo just popped up on one of those photo foraging scenarios looking for something else and I just had to laugh. People on the fan forums have been making jokes about filching one of these from out of the grocery stores when they appear. Someone apparently actually did it! LOL. Come to think of it, they must have been spirited away from my local stores almost immediately after arrival, I haven’t seen a one! (Photo by Amanda Tafras)

For those of you who saw this Colbert Nation episode which had Katherine Reutter asking Colbert to sign her leg, well here’s a picture of that cheeky request! LOL. According to Katherine, it says "Stephen Colbert Go for the Gold". And so she shall.

AMERICAN CUP 2

ANTHONY BARTHELL

Starting off with one of my very favorite skaters, Anthony Barthell. A prince of a guy, and not just on the ice. He had a personal best at American Cup 2, finishing 8th overall. Way to go Anthony, keep it up and Good Luck for the rest of the season too! (photo by Annette Gudmundsen Pumphrey)

CHERISE WILKINS

Congratulations to Cherise Wilkins (center) on being Number 1 overall for the ladies at American Cup 2. Quite an accomplishment. I’ll never forget going into the hotel dining area during one of last year’s competitions, and seeing Cherise trying to get her homework done before the weekend was over. Ugghh. I’m sure after a hard day of racing that’s the last thing anyone would want to do! LOL. (with Alaina Fiorenza, who finished 10th overall,on her left. Sadly, I don’t recognize the person on her right)

MARY GRACE

I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Mary, but this fair of face young lass finished 3rd overall. Photo by Teri Willingham

Mary Grace, TRF skater Erin Bartlett finished 18th, someone whose face is obscured by an elbow (sorry whoever you are)
and Sarah Chen finished 7th. Photo by Teri Willingham

EMILY SCOTT, KD TODD AND VICKY LABOURDETTE

Now aren’t these a couple of pretty fresh faces? Emily Scott finished 4th overall and KD Todd finished 5th overall. (photo by Annette Gudmundsen Pumphrey)

Emily Scott (Photo by Teri Willingham)

Vicky Labourdette finished 2nd overall. But I don't think she did it with these moves!
Different sport my dear. Photo by Teri Willingham

Vicky and Emily. Well girls, are you stretching out or just trying to give Michelle Kwan a run
for her money? (Photo by Teri Willingham)

MORGAN IZYKOWSKI

Morgan finished 6th overall.

EDDY ALVAREZ

Eddy finished 1st overall, and having seen him skate, that comes as no surprise. Congratulations Eddy! .

Sebastian Cano, Eddy Alvarez and Barry Winslow. Barry, another TRF skater and personal favorite, finished in the top 10, which he has been doing very consistently over the last year. Good Job Barry! (Photo by Teri Willingham)

SEBASTIAN CANO

Sebastian (don’t you just love that name? It just rolls off the tongue) finished 9th overall. (Photo by Teri Willingham)

JULIAN WOOD

Isn't this a happy site to see? Julian Wood back out on the ice after a year recovering from such a horrible injury. Julian finished 2nd overall in the Group 2 men. Good to have you back Julian! (by the way, Julian will be our Skater of the Month for April - watch for it!) Photos by Teri Willingham

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BOYS....

Andrew Astalos and Zach Fuller. Zach finished 21st overall and Andrew finished 26th overall.

The Southern Cal boys, all TRF skater’s who have a special place in my heart - Zach Fuller in the lead, Kyle Uyehara, Jonathan Sermeno and…ummm…I’m not sure….(Photo by Teri Willingham)

JONATHAN GARCIA

Jonathan finished 4th overall. He’s another skater I haven’t met, but I enjoy reading his
amusing posts on facebook. (Photo by Teri Willingham)

Jonathan Garcia, Ilia Kulick, (1998 Olympic Champion from Russia, in Men’s figure skating- for those who don’t follow ‘the other skating’…) Sebastian Cano, Eddy- I can’t take a picture without making a face- Alvarez (LOL) , Walter Rusk, Kendal Pumphrey (photo by Annette Gudmundsen Pumphrey)

NICK FRANK

Nick finished 12th overall. (Photo by Teri Willingham)

LANDON HATFIELD

Landon with Kendal Pumphrey. Landon finished 16th overall.
(Landon will also be our next Skater of the Month for March). (photo by Annette Gudmundsen Pumphrey)

HANGIN' WITH SCOTT HAMILTON

The skaters with one of my heros – Scott Hamilton. Many a night I’ve seen him skate when he was touring with ‘Stars On Ice’. ( Just thinking about that routine spoofing The Wizard of Oz still makes me laugh- Lawdy! All the costume changes! No wonder Scott was exhausted at the end of the performance!)

The skaters from left to right (sort of…) Vicky Labourdette, Morgan Izykowski, Jonathan Sermeno, Kd Todd, Kyle Uyehara, Scott Hamilton, Eddy Alvarez, Emily Scott, Walter Rusk , Kendal Pumphrey, Andrew Astalos, Andrea Dehnke, Zach Fuller, Mikey Burdekin, Matthew Rue Ferguson, Liz Looby
(Nice to see that Scott fits right in with Kyle and Eddy’s usual antics! LOL) (photo by Annette Gudmundsen Pumphrey)

INTRODUCING A FEW NEW FACES…AT LEAST TO ME ANYWAY!...

MATTHEW RUE FERGUSON

Matthew finished 24th overall. Photo by Teri Willingham

Michael Burdekin

I couldn't find any photos of our boy, Dan Fiorenza, but he finished the competition 19th overall. Walter Rusk finished 18th overall. For the official results, you can go to USS Results official page

…aaahhhh, the ‘bromance’ of it all…
Rumor has it the boys wanted the Gold on this one bad…but I guess it just wasn’t meant to be. They still got the Silver, and WE’LL TAKE IT! Job well done, gentlemen!
Even from the radio broadcast, you could tell they were digging in for all they were worth. Of all the races I missed by not being in attendance in Marquette, this is the one I probably regret not being able to watch ‘live and in person’ the most.

Doesn’t Ryan Leveille looks so down in this photo? LOL. Possibly because he knows this is probably the last time he’ll be competing on the ice and the last time on the podium. Even so, I’m sure adding one more silver medal to his collection was a nice way to retire.

UPDATE:12-31-2009

We have an urgent request from Southern California Speedskating Association (you know, the club a lot of our National skaters come out of! LOL) on behalf of Joey Lindsey.
You know Joey mostly as a short tracker, but look what he's accomplished as a long tracker in a very short time!
Those of you who have had the pleasure of meeting Joey know he's a very charming young man, and very deserving of any support you can give him.

JR And Joey

J.R. Celski (L) and Joey Lindsey skate around turn two as Eduardo Alvarez #49 falls down during the Men's 1500 Meter Semi-final at the U.S. Short Track Speedskating Championships at the Berry Events Center on September 9, 2009 in Marquette, Michigan. (September 8, 2009 - Photo by Doug Benc/Getty Images North America)

I'll never forget Joey lapping the pack at American Cup 1 last year. Held onto it too for most of the race...until he just plain ran out of gas. Near the end of the race, the rest of the pack was gaining on him. He said Shani wizzed by him, and whispered something to the effect of a good natured 'ah, come'on man! You can do better than that!'.

But sadly, poor Joey was completely spent. When he crossed the finish line, you could tell his thighs were just screaming at him in agony. No matter. He got a standing ovation and cheer from the crowd for the effort. Those are fond Short Track moments I'll always remember. It's not always the win, it's fighting the good fight.

Joey has pulled off an amazing feat as witnessed in the letter below from Sue Perles of SCSSA. Any help you can give Joey would be greatly appreciated. Don't think your donation is too small, it all adds up when many kind hearted individuals participate.

Joey Long track

Your donation is also tax deductible if given through SCSSA. Unfortunately, the time constraints are REALLY tight. The competition starts January 16th. So he'll need some moola before then to get his airfare.

You can also become a fan of Joey on his facebook page! Become a Fan! - at the following link:

Letter from Sue Perles:

Hi there. Nice to see the Rocker Fund out in force at the Montreal World Cup!

Joey Lindsey is one of our Southern California skaters. He tried but missed making the Short Track Olympic Team. Joey then decided to try long track and is competing in the LT Olympic Trials this week.

Well it remains uncertain if Joey will qualify for the Olympic Team, Joey has qualified for the World Sprint Team competing in Sapporo, Japan. This is a huge accomplishment for someone who has only been on long track skates for a few weeks!

US Speedskating has told athletes that they have to pay their own way to Japan for World Sprints. If they finish in the top 20 a skater will receive some USS funding. So, I am asking if the Rocker Fund can assist Joey in funding his trip to the World Sprint Championships. It would mean a lot to Joey and would be an excellent project for the Rocker Fund.

Thank your for considering this project and I look forward to seeing you all at an ice rink soon.

All the best,

- Sue

Please send your checks/donations written to SCSSA. Please indicate on the check and on the envelope that this is for Joey Lindsey.

Thank You on behalf of Joey

OK, the song is pure sap, and makes me want to gag…but the sentiment is spot on. I can’t say enough about how wonderful these 3 guys are. Even though they didn’t make the Olympic Team, they still stepped up in place of the injured and skated their hearts out to make sure the US of A got their 3 individual spots for each race and their relay position. It turns out, in some cases, this was in detriment to themselves. We here at the Rocker Fund would like to help. Stay tuned for changes on the site to accommodate these skaters who deserve so very much.

It seems in competing in the World Cups and helping out the Olympic Team, skaters like Anthony found themselves doubly hurt for doing so by not being able to accrue their own points for the American Cup competitions, which in turn, hurts their funding.

I chatted with him briefly in Montreal. Happy and satisfied with what he had experienced and
accomplished in his career, he was already looking into college and excited to be moving on to the next
chapter in his life. Not part of the Olympic Team, participating in these two very important competitions was just gravy. Knowing it would probably be the last time I would see him on the ice, I made sure to savor the moment.

GOOD LUCK to you Ryan in all your future endeavors!

MONTREAL - Canada may have won six medals at last weekend's short track speed skating World Cup, but Canadians actually won seven.

When Charles Hamelin captured the gold for Canada in the 1,500 metres on Saturday, lanky TRAVIS JAYNER was skating to the bronze in the two-tone blue colours of the United States.

Jayner is a dual citizen from Riverview, N.B., and is making a strong showing on the short track circuit.

He's one of a handful of Canadians in short track speed skating who will be competing for other teams at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

I’ll also note, that this was the first time I actually saw what happened to JR in this race. Jeff Simon fell right in front of us, and was having a hard time getting up, so I was focused on him when I heard the yell across the ice. Thumbs up to hero Walter Rusk for his quick response in coming to JR’s aid. JR is about 32:00 into the video, Apolo at about 28:00

UNDER JAE SU, U.S. NO LONGER A ONE-MAN SHOW

aao getty montreal

Four years ago, Apolo Ohno was the only American short-track skater to medal on the World Cup circuit heading into the Torino Olympics. This season, under the guidance of coach Jae Su Chun, the squad has developed into a well-rounded machine. Ohno and three other skaters, plus a relay team, all earned podium spots in Montreal last weekend.

By Greg Groggel, NBCOlympics.com | Posted: Nov 9, 4:51p ET | Updated: Nov 10, 11:51a ET

MONTREAL -- At last weekend's short track ISU World Cup in Montreal, four Americans landed on the podium in individual events. It's a marked shift from the last pre-Olympic season, when five-time Olympic medalist Apolo Ohno was the only American, male or female, to win a World Cup medal in three of the four stops.

Four years later, Ohno was able to again find the podium (500m silver), but this time joined by Katherine Reutter (1500m gold), Travis Jayner (1500m bronze), Jeff Simon (500m bronze) and the women's 3000m relay team, which took silver.

The United States' transformation from a singular short track nation to one of surprising depth can be traced to 2007, when current national team head coach Jae Su Chun arrived after a brief stint coaching in Canada. When Jae Su first joined the team in Salt Lake City, he decided to survey the short track landscape before making the move permanent for his wife and two sons. What the former South Korean skater saw, he liked.

"At that time, the U.S. wasn't really good. Only Apolo was good," says Jae Su in English, his second language. "But, I found possibility."

The new coach identified several aspects that needed tweaking in order to close what he described as a significant gap between Ohno and the rest of the skaters. "When I came here, the team looked like kindergarten and Apolo looked like a university student," Jae Su says. "So that first year was going from kindergarten to elementary school, the second year from elementary school to first year of high school. And the goal for this year was to bring them from high school to university."

With a total of six short track skaters now with individual World Cup medals from the current season, consider their matriculation to higher education complete.

But in the U.S., where winter athletes are either made or left for anonymity every four years, success on the World Cup circuit is meaningless if doesn't translate into Olympic medals. To that end, Jae Su has a result in mind -- more medals than ever for the U.S., bettering the previous best of four at the 1994 Lillehammer Games. In a sport as unpredictable as they come, five will be a difficult task, particularly with strong teams from South Korea and China, not to mention Canada benefiting from home ice advantage. In any case, expect an American not named Apolo to earn an individual medal in Vancouver.

Below are five other key notes from this past weekend in Montreal:

REUTTER CONTINUES ASCENT
Katherine Reutter, the current USOC athlete of the month, won her second World Cup gold medal of the season and her career in the 1,500m. The three-time national champion also made the 1,000m final, but was unable to penetrate what she calls the Great Wall of China, finishing fourth to three Chinese skaters. Reutter is now ranked second in the world in both the 1,000m and 1,500m. Jae Su describes Reutter has not being 100 percent talent, but rather as tireless a worker as he's coached, and calls her one of the best in the world.

The Champaign, Ill., native went to the same high school as Olympic legend Bonnie Blair and should now be considered a medal contender in both her signature distances this February.

CAN’T MISS SOUTH KOREA

Notably missing from the World Cup in Montreal was three-time Torino medalist South Korean Lee Ho-Suk (gold, 5000m relay; silver 1000m, 1500m). Lee injured his ankle in training after the last World Cup in Seoul and while the 23-year-old is expected to miss this weekend's World Cup in Marquette, he will be able to return to training without serious repercussions in two weeks. Even without Lee, who most credit as the team's leader, South Korea still won four men's medals. Lee's teammate Sung Si-Bak took first in the 1000m, second in the 1,500m and helped his team win the men's relay. Sung is a 5-foot-11 beanpole who, along with Lee (the two will race in all three individual events in Vancouver), could win multiple medals again in February.

REMARKABLE RECOVER
After rehabbing a six-inch long and two-inch deep laceration suffered at U.S. Short Track Olympic Trials for the past eight weeks, American J.R. Celski was greeted jubilantly by his teammates and coaching staff upon their reunion in Montreal. The young skater, who won four medals at the 2009 World Championships, demonstrated his recovery by standing on his left leg and bending down and back up. Celski said he now has near full range and plans to return to skating in one week.

"I'm so jealous I have to be up here and they get to be down there," a visibly anxious Celski said from the stands.

The 19-year-old likely won't race until the 2010 Games, where he's slated to compete in the 1000m, 1500m and 5000m relay. Celski had been considered a strong medal contender in Vancouver, but as of now it's difficult to determine whether he could still be a breakout star.

THE UNBEATABLE WANG
Chinese skater Wang Meng took first place in the women's 500m event. It was the third 500m World Cup victory this season for the reigning Olympic champion. Wang has come to define dominance in the sport's most tumultuous, unpredictable event. Bet against her to repeat with gold in Vancouver at your own financial peril.

COLBERT NATION
The latest nation slated to make its Olympic debut in Vancouver isn't even a country at all. Last week on "The Colbert Report," host Stephen Colbert announced that Colbert Nation-- the designation given to the legion of the program's fans -- will be the primary sponsor of US Speedskating. The surprise announcement left officials scrambling to get the Colbert Nation logo pressed onto the short track bodysuits before the first finals on Saturday. The appropriately paletted red, white and blue logo attracted plenty of attention off the ice. But did it make a difference on the ice?

"Definitely, definitely," Jayner said with a smile after winning his first career World Cup medal in the 1500m. "Well that and a lot of hard work."
